Beyond consultations and surgery, The Eye Surgery offers a number of services that support your broader eye care — from on-site optometry and diagnostic screening to driver's licence certification. This page covers what's available, and a few things worth knowing about how the practice works.
In-House Optometry
Two optometrists work on-site, available on request for refractions and general eye tests. On-site optometry is provided through Haus Optika, an independent optometry practice with a shop-in-shop location within our Sea Point rooms.
The Eye Surgery is an independent private medical practice and has no preference over which optometrist you use — if you already have an optometrist you're happy with, we're glad to refer you back to them, or liaise with them directly, rather than assuming you'll use our in-house option.
Diagnostic Equipment
The practice uses diagnostic equipment from leading ophthalmology suppliers, including:

Zeiss OCT (optical coherence tomography) — detailed retinal and optic nerve imaging, used in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as glaucoma, AMD, and diabetic retinopathy

Zeiss Clarus fundus camera — wide-field photography of the retina for screening and monitoring

Oculus Pentacam — corneal topography and tomography, used in assessing conditions such as keratoconus and in planning laser eye surgery and cataract or lens surgery

Zeiss IOLMaster — precise eye measurements used to calculate intraocular lens power ahead of cataract or lens implant surgery

Zeiss digital phoropter — used for refraction testing to determine glasses prescriptions

Zeiss Visufit — captures centration data used to fit spectacle lenses accurately to the individual

Zeiss Humphrey visual field analyser — used for perimetry (visual field testing), particularly relevant in glaucoma monitoring

Auto keratometer — measures the curvature of the cornea

iCare tonometer — measures intraocular pressure
OxIA Screening Centre
The Eye Surgery is a registered OxIA screening centre, offering software-assisted retinal screening, most commonly used for diabetic retinopathy monitoring. See our diabetic retinopathy page for more detail on how this screening works.
Discovery Vitality Glaucoma Screening
For Discovery members over the qualifying age, a Vitality glaucoma screening can be done at the practice, which may count towards Vitality points. Please confirm your eligibility and the current age requirement with Discovery Vitality directly, and let our booking team know if you'd like this screening included in your visit.
Driver's Licence Eye Certificates
Renewing a driver's licence in South Africa requires proof that your vision meets the required standard. This screening can be done at the end of a general ophthalmic consultation at no additional charge, as an alternative to queuing at a licensing centre. The screening is conducted in line with requirements set by the national Department of Transport, and you'll receive an official certificate confirming the result, accepted by licensing departments.
This screening is a vision check for licensing purposes and doesn't replace a full eye examination. A comprehensive eye exam can pick up early signs of conditions that don't cause obvious symptoms at first, including glaucoma, dry eye, cataracts, and eye changes related to high blood pressure or diabetes — which is one reason an annual eye check is worthwhile even if your vision feels fine.
Reports and Referrals
Medical reports relating to your consultation or treatment are available on request.
The practice does not provide medico-legal reports, or reports for Workers' Compensation (COID), military, or Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims. If you need a report of this kind, please arrange this with a practitioner who offers that specific service.

Can I use my own optometrist instead of the in-house option?
Yes. The Eye Surgery is an independent private practice with no preference over which optometrist you use, and we're happy to refer you back to your own optometrist or liaise with them directly.
Do you offer Discovery Vitality glaucoma screening?
