A pterygium is a triangular-shaped growth of fleshy tissue on the white of the eye which grows until it eventually extends over the entire cornea. This growth may in some cases cause blindness if it is left untreated for a long period of time.

Medical Training
Dr. Aleksic has dedicated his entire adult life to medicine and graduated from the Belgrade Medical School in 1991. Even before specialising in Ophthalmology and Eye Surgery he was involved in the provision of eye care in South Africa while resident at both Edendale and Greys Hospitals in Pietermaritzburg under the auspices of the satellite unit of the Medical School at the University of Natal. Dr. Aleksic obtained a postgraduate degree in Ophthalmology from the University of Cape Town.
